When it comes to notifications, some are welcomed and there are those we’d rather avoid. Learn how to turn certain notifications on or off for a better experience
As a social media platform, Instagram offers a variety of features for both personal and business use. One such feature is shopping, where businesses can tag products in their posts or create dedicated shopping posts and profiles to showcase their goods and services.
However, if you’re not interested in shopping notifications or just want to declutter your notifications, you can turn them off.
In this comprehensive article, we’ll show you how to customize your experience on Instagram by managing your notifications settings.
Why Are Notifications So Important?
Notifications serve as a way for Instagram to inform you about certain events or actions that occur within the app. These can range from someone following you, commenting on your post, or even tagging you in a photo.
On the shopping front, notifications can let you know when someone has liked or commented on a product tagged in one of your posts, or when a shoppable post has been published by a brand or business you follow.
While notifications can be helpful in keeping users up to date on their activity and interactions, they can also become overwhelming and cluttered if not managed properly.
This is why Instagram allows for customization of your notifications settings so that you only receive notifications that are relevant to you.
Turning Shopping Notifications On or Off on Instagram
To turn shopping notifications on or off, first go to your profile and tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner.
Select “Settings” followed by “Notifications”.
From there, you’ll see a list of categories for notifications, including “Shopping.”
All you have to do is select the “Shopping” category, which will bring you to a menu that features selections such as “Accounts You Follow” and “Suggested For You” — both of which have toggle buttons. Simply switch the buttons to “On” or “Off” based on your preference.
By turning off shopping notifications, you won’t receive any updates about new products from businesses or brands that you follow. However, if you have a business account and want to stay up-to-date with your own shop, you’ll want to leave the notifications on.
It’s important to note that turning off shopping notifications will not affect your ability to browse and shop on Instagram — it just means that you won’t receive specific alerts about new products or updates from other businesses.
Managing Other Instagram Notifications
In addition to shopping notifications, you can also manage a variety of other notifications, such as activity on your posts and stories, live videos, direct messages, and more. To customize these settings, go to the “Notifications” menu in your settings and select the category you want to adjust, including:
- A “Pause All” option
- “Posts, Stories and Comments”
- “Following and Followers”
- “Direct Messages and Calls”
- “Live and Reels”
- “Fundraisers”
- “From Instagram”
You may also select “Other Notification Types”. These include “Email Notifications” and, of course, “Shopping”.
Each category has its own set of options that allow you to choose whether you want to receive push notifications, email updates, or both. You can also customize the frequency at which you receive notifications, or opt to “Pause All” for a temporary break from alerts.
